The Christian's Proclamation

“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God…. But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumbling block, and unto the Greeks foolishness. But unto us which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God” - 1 Corinthians 1:18 & 23-25

This is the day of SLOGANS for every conceivable cause under the sun!

For the church, “WE PREACH CHRIST CRUCIFIED” is not a slogan, but a PROCLAMATION.

Many years ago, while traveling in the country on business, I stopped by a boarded up Wesleyan church. The fabric of the building peeped out between the ivy and the briars. Above the door a stone was partly visible, with a date on it and underneath I could just make out the words ‘WE PREACH’. The growth of years covered the rest!

There are many preaching all kinds of religions and creeds. But nothing is on a par with the preaching of CHRIST CRUCIFIED. Today, it is a proclamation that is daubed ‘Fundamentalism’, and attributed to that extreme right wing of the evangelical church which appears to the critics to have no other message!

We will appreciate why there is this emphasis when we reflect that THE CROSS OF CHRIST:

DEMONSTRATES the depravity of the human heart;

DISPLAYS the love of God;

DESCRIBES the wickedness of man;

DIVIDES all of humanity;

DETERMINES man’s destiny;

DEMANDS the denial of self. (Luke 9:24-26).

It was the German theologian Eric Sauer, in his book ‘Dawn of World Redemption’ who said that the Cross was of

ALL AGES the turning point;

ALL LOVE the highest point;

ALL SUFFERING the deepest point;

ALL SALVATION the starting point.

At the Cross, God substituted the Lord Jesus’

SINLESSNESS for my sinfulness,

HOLINESS for my unholiness,

RIGHTEOUSNESS for my unrighteousness.

PURITY for my impurity.

He gave ALL that He was for ALL that I am.

HALLELUJAH, WHAT A SAVIOUR!
