The Search for Answers
“And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly: I perceived that this was also a striving after wind. For in much wisdom is much grief, and he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow”.
We are told that we live in a POST MODERN society. A society with no real answers, only questions and even the questions are questioned! The Modernist views the world as a community bound together in a common search for answers. Post modernism is a world of individuals in a sea of uncertainty. There are NO absolutes anymore.
Someone said, “the world is no longer a scene, a place where the play is staged and directed towards a designed end. Instead it is obscene – a lot of noise and frantic activity without a plot”. It leads to chaos, born out of pessimism and maintained by confusion.
Those of us who were brought up in the early and mid part of the 20th century, experienced certainty and authority leading to a sense of security that will help us to see this post modern society for what it is. But, sadly, this is not the case with today's teenagers who have never known certainty. They will argue that there is no point in seeking after truth if there is no truth to be found. No point in standing for what is right if there is nothing to measure it by. As the saying goes ‘it is your right to believe what you want so long as you afford me the same right to believe something else’.
Criticism has degenerated into cynicism, everybody is encouraged to question everything, but no one, it seem, has the right to be definite about anything!
How different the situation is when we have the faith (God given) to accept the veracity of God’s word. And to be able to say “I know and am sure”. Let us hold fast to the things which we have embraced and seek more earnestly the salvation of those beguiled by Satan’s lies.
